Using AI with student data
AI tools can save hours on reports, feedback and analysis. Before you paste anything in: sort it, strip the names, and check what comes back against your own data.
Sort it first: what may go into an AI tool
Nevernot even with the names removed
- Health, medical or learning-support details
- Safeguarding, behavior or family matters
- Photos, voice or video of students
- ID numbers, emails and passwords
- Anything told to you in confidence
Only anonymizedswap every name for a code first
- Class results and assessment exports
- Report comments you want help with
- Attendance and progress patterns
- Student writing you want feedback on
Finenothing about a real student
- Lesson plans, rubrics and tasks
- Made-up examples and case studies
- Published curriculum and texts
- Your own writing, with no student details
Four steps for anything amber
- 1Anonymize
Paste your class list or results into the Data Anonymizer. It swaps every name for a code in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
Data Anonymizer - 2Ask
Paste the coded data into a school-approved AI tool, signed in with your school account, and ask your question.
- 3Check
Check the answer against your original data before you trust a word of it, with the checklist below.
- 4Restore
Paste the answer back into the Data Anonymizer to put the names back. Read it before it goes to anyone.
Data Anonymizer
Check the answer against the source
- Totals, averages and counts match your own sums
- Every code is there exactly once: no one missing, no one invented
- Nothing is said about a student that isn’t in the data
- Comments are fair across boys and girls, languages and groups
- You would be happy for the student and their parents to read it
Good to know
- AI can be confidently wrong with numbers. Recount anything that matters.
- Codes hide names, not everything. A rare detail can still point to one student: leave it out.
- The code key stays with you. Never paste it into the AI tool.
- Not sure? Ask before you paste, not after.
